Tips for Hosting a Zero Waste Event!

Green Bellevue wants to help you Make Zero Waste the Norm!  What is a zero waste event?  Zero waste means little to no items (approx 2%) going to the landfill.  Instead, focus on reusing, recycling, and if you have access to composting through the Hillside Compost Club, you can be sure your event will be zero waste!!

Get the Green Bellevue Make Zero Waste the Norm kit!

We will supply you with large, colorful signs to attach to your containers with clear instructions for what can be recycled, put in an orange bag and composted.  If you have large containers (up to 55 gallon) we can supply the large orange bags and compostable bags.

Don’t have access to commercial composting but are determined to make your event Zero Waste?  Contact Ruth Richter at Green Bellevue to discuss the options.

Here are some tips on making your party or event a zero waste success!

  1. If it is a smaller party, try using reusable dishware as much as possible.  This does make more work for the party host, but sending less items to the landfill is worth it!

  2. Otherwise, if you have access to commercial composting, you can use compostable plates and utensils.

  3. Be sure to inform each and every guest on how to use your waste receptacles.  People are not used to separating their waste and appreciate the heads up.

  4. If you are using compostable utensils, be sure to make that clear because they can easily be mistaken for plastic.

  5. Juice boxes can be recycled.  Just empty the juice box, rinse it out if possible and recycle it!  The plastic straws can be recycled in the orange soft plastic bags.

  6. Limit decorations to items that can be reused, recycled or composted.  Helium balloons or one time use decorations are not necessary for a party to look great!
